Skin ExfoliatorsOur skin is the largest organ of the body and it forms a protective covering around our bodies that holds and protects all our inner structures. It is also waterproof so that we do not dry up in the heat or melt in the rain, and it protects us from the damaging effects of radiation from sunlight. Our skin has to be tough enough to act as a shield against injury, yet supple enough to allow movement. Skin is made of two layers. The outer layer is the epidermis and the inner layer is the dermis. The epidermis consists of cells that are constantly dividing and moving up to the surface, where they flatten, die and shed. It takes three to four weeks for a cell in the lowest layer to reach the skins surface. The dermis is made up of bundles of collagen and elastin fibres. This shedding process occurs naturally but the skin cells can build up on the surface of the skin and give it a dull appearance. This can in turn lead to the pores becoming blocked and spots, blackheads and whiteheads forming. This is where a skin exfoliator comes in. It is a gently abrasive product which gently clears away the surface build up of cells, allowing more oxygen to get into the skin and preventing the formation of spots etc. It will bring a dull skin back to life and should be used as part of your skin care routine.
